Honored to be a guest on the The Michelangelo Signorile Show Friday October 21, we discussed the Southern Poverty Law Center Report: “THE PROPAGANDISTS: Bryan Fischer, the American Family Association & the Demonization of LGBT People,” detailing Fischer’s radical extremism, and how he spent almost three decades in Idaho.

In “THE PROPAGANDIST,” my co-author, Jill Kuraitis and I revealed Fischer’s rise to the national spotlight. This in-depth investigative piece on Fischer’s history in Idaho shows how mainstream Idahoans jump-started his controversial career.

Michelangelo Signorile served as editor-at-large and columnist at The Advocate, and was a columnist for OUT magazine. He was a co-founding editor of the headline-making news magazine OutWeek, which was at the center of the debates over “outing” in the 1990s. Signorile has authored several bestselling books, including the groundbreaking study of the gay “closet,” Queer in America, which firebrand playwright and gay activist Larry Kramer called “one of the most important books of the 20th century.” Signorile’s third book, Life Outside, was a 1998 finalist for the prestigious New York Public Library Book Award for Excellence in Journalism.

Although Fischer never directly called Mormonism a “cult,” he has inferred it by the many other things he has said.

The Fischer Files Report reveals the AFA radio host’s hypocrisy with an excerpt from a 2005 sermon when he was pastor of Community Church of the Valley. From the pulpit Bryan Fischer tells his flock exactly how he views the faith of his “friends” in the LDS Church.

Idaho Journalists Expose Bryan Fischer in National SPLC Report

Southern Poverty Law Center, SPLC, Boise, ID – A report published by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), THE PROPAGANDISTS: Bryan Fischer, the American Family Association & the Demonization of LGBT People, was released yesterday in Tupelo, Miss., the headquarter city of the AFA.

The Propagandist is an in-depth investigative piece about Fischer’s history in Idaho written for the SPLC by Idaho journalists Jody May-Chang and Jill Kuraitis, both of whom have closely followed Fischer’s activities for many years.

Reacting to the report Monday on his AFA radio show Fischer said, “[This] is sort of a hit piece on yours truly I mean there is one distortion, error, lie after another in this piece, I mean it’s just amazing the lies and some of the people I used to trust are the source of these lies.”

Jill Kuraitis, one of the co-authors of The Propagandist said today, “Multiple attempts were made to get Fischer on the record and present his side. He never returned our calls or emails. Fischer had his chance to weigh in and chose not to.”

“Bryan Fischer has done a lot of damage to LGBT people and their families here in Idaho and is now spreading his poison nationally,” added May-Chang. “For years he has been calling us child molesters, disease spreaders, and sexual deviants with impunity. The truth has finally caught up with him. Our reporting is solid.”

The Propagandist will be included in the November issue of the Southern Poverty Law Center quarterly magazine, the Intelligence Report.
